British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced in a video statement posted on social media Friday that he has tested positive for coronavirus.

The 55-year-old Conservative Party leader announced in the video that after developing mild symptoms over the last 24 hours, including “a temperature and a persistent cough,” he tested positive for COVID-19. His plan now is to work from home and self-isolate, as he encouraged others to do to continue to “protect” the National Health Service (NHS) from being overwhelmed. Read more…

DOJ Charges Venezuela’s Maduro With Narcoterrorism

Attorney General William Barr announced narcoterrorism charges against Venezuelan socialist leader Nicolas Maduro for his role in facilitating the global drug trade in coordination with the Colombia-based terrorist group known as the FARC.

The Justice Department said on Thursday that Maduro formed and leads his own drug ring, dubbed the Cartel of the Sun, and gives the FARC free rein to operate in parts of Venezuela.

Investigators said Maduro and his co-conspirators were being charged with conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import hundreds of tons of cocaine into the United States, and a variety of weapons charges. LA Mayor Threats: Water, Power Shut Off if You Don’t Close Up Shop

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti threatened “non-essential” businesses Tuesday that if they do not obey the city’s “stay at home” order to close during the pandemic crises, he will cut off their water and their electricity.

Speaking at his daily briefing, the mayor described his new enforcement initiative (via KTLA 5):

The mayor went on to announce the “business ambassadors program” – an effort to get nonessential businesses to close.

Trump Administration Moves Tax Day

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Friday announced that Americans will have until July 15 to file their taxes, moving the annual April 15 deadline to stem the effects of the coronavirus outbreak.

“At [President Trump’s] direction, we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties,” Mnuchin wrote on Twitter.

“If you have refunds or credits, you can still claim now,” President Trump said Friday at a White House press conference.

Mnuchin echoed that, saying: “I encourage all taxpayers who may have tax refunds to file now to get your money.” Read more…

California Governor Issues ‘Stay at Home’ Order for Residents

California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statewide order for all of the state’s residents to “stay at home” during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We need to bend the curve in the state of California,” Newsom said in an announcement. “There’s a social contract here. People I think recognize the need to do more. They will adjust and adapt as they have.”

“Home isolation is not my preferred choice… but it is a necessary one,” Newsom added. “This is not a permanent state; it is a moment in time.”

In accordance with the new “stay at home” measure, dine-in restaurants, bars, clubs, gyms, and fitness studios will be closed. Public events and gatherings of people are also not permitted. Read more…
